Atone is the Hyaluronic Acid serum of our dreams. Over the course of a year, we tinkered away in formulating Atone to be especially helpful for those with acne or inflammation-prone skin, as hyper-dryness leads to an over-compensation of sebum production, and therefore clogged pores and inflammation.
If you do have acne or inflammation-prone skin, fear not deep moisture, as hydration is your skin’s best friend. Just as it is within our bodies, proper epidermal hydration lays the foundation for a balanced epidermal microbiome and establishes sustainable cellular resiliency. Atone anoints all three skin layers without clogging pores.
We’re glad to say that this is a truly well-rounded serum ideal for all skin types and gentle enough to use every day! Atone compliments any other serum or moisturizer in your routine, making it a non-negotiable step for us.
So, what even is Hyaluronic Acid?Contrary to to its name (as “acid” often denotes an idea of stripping or exfoliating) HA is actually a humectant, meaning it keeps cells moist by bringing water to the stratum corneum (the top layer of skin). It is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (sugar) found in the human body functioning to plump skin and hold water for longer. When used topically, it has been proven to speed wound healing, establish a hydrated barrier of mitochondrial protection, and visibly improve signs of stress and aging. Our HA is capable of holding 1,000x its weight in water, delivering long-lasting and corrective moisture.
It is not only the HA in Atone that makes it so effective, though. We consciously formulated this serum to include a few other critical ingredients to work in tandem to generate glowing, fresh skin function in all three layers. The following are our favorite.
✺ UNDARIA PINNATIFIDA CELL CULTURE EXTRACT ≫ Rich in iodine, iron, potassium, calcium and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6, our Wakame (seaweed) Bioferment increases skin’s oxygen consumption, while reducing the formation of reactive oxygen species to increase overall mitochondrial efficiency. It delivers potent purifying effects to minimize damage at the cellular level.
✺ VITAMIN C ≫ We love a daily dose of topical Vit C to fight environmental stressors like UV radiation, harsh wind, and ozone pollution. It is a non-negotiable in our line up. While housing major protection properties, Vit C similarly regenerates the skin by evening out tone (think sun spots, scarring, hyperpigmentation) by blocking the pathway of pigment synthesis. It is a necessary cofactor in building new collagen bundles, and has antimicrobial benefits to keep the epidermal microbiome in check — fighting off pathogenic bacteria and breeding advantageous bacteria.
✺ COQ10 ≫ As one of the most fundamental antioxidants, Coq10 is a kind of fat-soluble quinone compound found in every cell of the human body and is vital in energy production of cells. When applied topically, it is known to repair damage and fight free radicals caused by UV radiation at the cellular level. It evens out skin tone by blocking tyrosinase, which helps with the production of melanin.
✺ GREEN TEA EXTRACT ≫ A humble and too often over-looked ingredient in skincare, Green Tea possesses potent antioxidant (protective + corrective), anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a highly chemopreventive (slows cancer development) compound. Catechins and Polyphenols scavenge for free radicals in skin layers to protect + correct environmental, lifestyle, or stress-related damage. Its antimicrobial properties are important for treating acne and unclogging pores. And since it contains caffeine, Green Tea is immediately helpful in depuffing and tightening, as its tannins shrink blood vessels and calm inflammation.
✺ MSM ≫ The high sulfur content (34%) in MSM is key in inhibition the breakdown of collagen, making it an important anti-aging, as well as scarring-corrective compound. It similarly improves cell wall permeability by inhibiting androgen hormones, allowing vital nutrients to flow through to cells. For easily irritated / sensitive skin, it is highly soothing, hydrating, and regenerates scar tissue, improves wound healing and decreases redness.
How do we suggest using Atone?
We like rubbing 1-3 pumps (depending no how much moisture you’re needing) onto clean skin both morning and evening after cleansing and before applying a consecutive serum. It's best to keep skin damp when applying Atone (or use after a hydrosol / toner), as Hyaluronic Acid binds with present moisture to create deeper hydration.
Again, remember that Hyaluronic Acid serums are intended to be used as a moisture-boosting base for a consecutive serum. For all skin types, we suggest using Atone in tandem with ALCHEMY. This combo is safe + effective to use every day, even on the most sensitive skin.
